Mobile Games News Review | Week of 17 to 23 January 2022

January 2022 mobile games news recap n3

Check out the weekly recap of mobile gaming news on Android and iOS for the week of January 17-23, 2022! We'll let you read it all below. ⬇️

1️⃣ The week started with a bang with the release of Awaken: Chaos Era, a mobile game that has been in pre-registration for several months and that many players were waiting for. I'm a little disappointed because even if the game offers some nice finishing touches, it relies above all on an ultra-classic gacha system that doesn't hide from wanting to stick to all the codes of the genre. It's done and well done but it sincerely lacks any artistic approach or originality.

2️⃣ I promise, we didn't lie to you last week. While we told you the biggest buyout in video games when Take-Two got Zynga for $12.7 billion, it didn't take long for that historic event to be dethroned. Less than 10 days later, Microsoft bought Activision Blizzard King for the modest sum of 68.7 billion dollars. This obviously raises questions about Xbox and Game Pass exclusivity for Activision Blizzard licenses such as Call of Duty against Sony's console. Some are reassuring that this would not be in Microsoft's short-term economic interest, while others see a drop in Sony's sales if it does not react... which explains the drop in Sony's stock market following the announcement of the buyout. Only time will tell.

3️⃣ Notice to fans of space-time transport phone boxes: a few days ago, East Side Games Group signed a multi-year partnership with BBC Studios to bring a global release of Doctor Who mobile to Android and iOS in 2022, free-to-play. Players will find many of the show's characters in a story-driven adventure featuring both iconic episodes and new stories to experience with the Doctor.

4️⃣ Good and bad news for TFT. On the one hand, Set 6.5 Neons of Night is preparing for release with new Hextech augmentations and the notable disappearance of the Academic and Imperial traits among the Set 6 TFT champion classes. In exchange, the Hextech and Seducer traits will make their appearance. All the details of TFT patch 6.5 can be found in our dedicated article. On the other hand, TFT is crusading against the Vietnamese studio Imba Network. Indeed, this studio has created what appears to be a more than inspired copy of Teamfight Tactics called I Am Hero: AFK Tactical Teamfight. Imba Network is thus getting a lawsuit that seems quite deserved since some characters like Teemo, here named Tomee, have in I Am Hero descriptions identical to those of TFT, to the word.

5️⃣ If you're feeling seafaring this early in the year, go ahead and pre-register for War for the Seas, a maritime open-world announced by NetEase. Already available on Android for several months, it will be released on iOS on February 14th. You will be able to take part in naval battles, take on the role of a merchant or even have relationships with certain characters. The locations of the game are based on the real world, as you can sail in Africa, Europe or America for example.

6️⃣ The new season of FIFA Mobile 2022 gets some much-needed changes with an improved player market, live commentary in 11 different languages and numerous graphical and gameplay optimisations.

7️⃣ Netflix mobile games are seeing their ranks swell since their launch. This time around, Arcanium: Rise of Akhan is added to the catalogue and offers you a card adventure. Assemble a team of three heroes to save the world of Arzu from destruction in this roguelike and deckbuilding title. As a reminder, Netflix games are currently available with your normal subscription (regardless of package) without ads or additional purchases.

8️⃣ Phantom Blade: Executioners closed beta will launch on January 28, 2022. In-game, this gacha with a particular visual style will impose an original combat style with multiple combinations and possibilities as well as a narrative in which the player will have to get involved through difficult decisions. As for the test phase, the beta of Torchlight Infinite has already started since January 18th.

9️⃣ Board game and RPG, RPG Dice: Heroes of Whitestone is out this week on Android and iOS. Incidentally, the launch of this title also marks the entry of WIMO Games (made up of video game industry veterans from companies such as Zynga or EA) into the big leagues as Heroes of Whitestone is their first global release.

🔟 Finally, to conclude this weekly news list, Feral Interactive, SEGA and Creative Assembly have announced the release of Total War: Medieval 2 for next spring on Android and iOS. Whether it's for fans of the licence or for budding strategists, this announcement is good news as Feral Interactive is in charge of the mobile port, apart from their recent Alien: Isolation mobile, the quality of which is undeniable.

Be sure to check out the latest mobile game releases to see what's new! See you next week for fresh news on your favourite mobile games. 😃
