The release of The Dragon Prince: Xadia, based on the Netflix series of the same name, on Android and iOS on 30 July probably didn't escape you! The hype surrounding this new launch was heightened by the arrival of season 6 of the series 4 days earlier, on 26 July. Let's take a look back at The Dragon Prince: Xadia, and the phenomenon that this transmedia licence has become.
Release of The Dragon Prince: Xadia, a complete multiplayer RPG faithful to the source material
It's not unusual for the American streaming giant to adapt some of its series (particularly reality shows) into mobile games. A recent example is Too Hot to Handle 3, a pick-up game that you can think whatever you like...
On the other hand, this is the first time that a Netflix original series has become transmedia with a multiplayer RPG like The Dragon Prince: Xadia.
In this new addition to the Netflix catalogue, you'll discover a story that adds depth to that of the series, while remaining canon. You'll find iconic characters like Callum and Rayla and a newcomer, Zeph, in an action RPG that incorporates all the mechanics of the genre: quests, loot, dungeons, crafting, boss battles and more.
Add to that a bit of hack'n slash, a dozen or so characters to discover, some exploration and the chance to play with friends thanks to the matchmaking system, and you've got a really successful game.
Wonderstorm behind the The Dragon Prince transmedia project
Behind The Dragon Prince series and mobile game is a studio called Wonderstorm. In an interview with GameDaily, the developers at Wonderstorm stated their desire to transform their draconic licence into a transmedia IP .
From the beginning, The Dragon Prince is intended to be an amazing story, but also a world from which we can build incredible games and play experiences
The Dragon Prince is Wonderstorm's first project of this scale and, to bring it to fruition, the studio has surrounded itself with the right people. Wonderstorm called on developers experienced in designing AAA games, storytelling specialists and, of course, a publisher capable of supporting their project and giving it visibility. That's all it took to create a transmedia licence that's generating hype all over the world!
Just look at the hype surrounding the release of The Dragon Prince: Xadia, and the excitement generated by the announcement of the 6th season of the series , released on Netflix on 26 July. It is already top 1 in the Netflix Kids & Family section in the United States.
So it's quite possible that other projects will be added to the Dragon Prince transmedia licence in the future. In the meantime, we urge you to try out The Dragon Prince: Xadia on Android or iOS, whether or not you're a fan of the series!
