Heartopia review: the new Animal Crossing?

More info

Welcome to the cute, colourful and highly addictive world of Heartopia, the latest cozy multiplayer game from XD Games. If, like me, you've been waiting for the worthy heir to Animal Crossing, you're looking at it! After playing for dozens of hours, I'd like to invite you to discover a life simulator that has nothing (or almost nothing) to envy Nintendo's game.

Heartopia review: the new Animal Crossing?

Positive points

  • The cute world and chill atmosphere
  • A satisfying gameplay loop
  • A wealth of content and activities
  • The economic system in favour of free-to-play

Negative points

  • The controller stand is conspicuous by its absence
  • Construction mode hard to get to grips with on a smartphone screen

My final opinion on Heartopia

Let's get straight to the verdict of my Heartopia test: I loved my experience of the game. Heartopia takes all the codes of cozy games and life simulators, but does it very well. With daily quests, new features to unlock all the time and professions to develop, there's never a dull moment. What's more, Heartopia isn't short of surprises, as there are plenty of hidden NPCs on the island selling rare items. So exploration is rewarded, and that's great fun!

But what most Heartopia players will be interested in, of course, is the house-building and customisation part of the game. The building mode may be a little tricky to get to grips with on a phone screen, but it's still great fun to decorate and furnish your cosy little nest. And therein lies Heartopia's business model. By purchasing in-game currency for real money, you can unlock exclusive furniture sets. But it's perfectly possible to play as an F2P player, as a huge amount of furniture is unlocked daily in the game. The same goes for the outfits, which are incredibly varied!

With its adorable, colourful world, numerous single-player and multiplayer events, wealth of content and high level of customisation, Heartopia is a serious competitor to Animal Crossing. Unfortunately, the lack of controller support is the downside of my Heartopia review. If you're interested in the game, you'll have to consider it.

At last, a well-done fishing mini-game!
