Since the beginning of the Lineage license in 1998 in South Korea, the MMORPG has evolved a lot. From the PC and console formats to mobile, the genre has found new horizons for expansion. And so it is that after Lineage 2: Revolution already released on Android and iOS in 2016, Lineage W has just been announced for mobile. But then, what to think of this future NCSoft release?
With Lineage W, NCSoft remains in their comfort zone. Finding them on a new MMO is what has made them successful so far. Indeed, how can you think of NCSoft without thinking of the licenses Lineage, Guild Wars, Aion and Blade and Soul that have made their reputation? However, Lineage W might have a hard time making it to mobile. Firstly, the Playstore feedback on Lineage 2: Revolution developed by NCSoft and published by Netmarble.
The game would be pay-to-win as much as you like, would not handle its UI well and the integration of new players on its existing servers, could be played far too much in auto mode, not to mention the complicated and poorly explained mechanics that would spoil the game experience. Ouch. The future looks immediately less bright for this new mobile opus Lineage W. Secondly, the mobile MMO market is getting saturated as the months go by and, if some people are still willing to spend, not sure that betting on the Lineage experience is their best option considering the last title released. A3 Still Alive, Genshin ImpactAura Kingdom, Tales of Wind, to name but a few... Mobile MMORPGs have already invaded the stores and Lineage W will have to find its own way to make its mark.
Information about Lineage W is scarce and it was only a few days ago that it was officially announced that the game was in production. It is already known that the game will be released directly worldwide and not as a soft launch. No information has been released about the crossplatform or gameplay. On the other hand, a video teaser and a teaser site for the game have been released.

If you like cinematics and visuals Lineage in particular, the site is really nice and elegantly decorated. As you can see from the teaser, the date of August 19, 2021 is listed, but this is not the release date. On August 19, we'll learn more about Lineage W at its Showcase with hopefully a lot of information about the upcoming NCSoft mobile MMORPG.
Honestly, I'm very much looking forward to Lineage W. However, as the feedback on the latest mobile game in the licence is not great, I'll wait until I have it in my hands to make up my mind.
As a bonus, I leave you with the trailer of Aion 2, also an MMORPG developed by the NC studio for the mobile support.
