It's the surprise of the weekend, and it's a pretty crazy one: by the end of the year, we could be seeing Final Fantasy XIV on mobile! The Chinese General Administration of Press and Publishing (which we mentioned in a previous news item on Astaweave Haven) has given the go-ahead for the publication of Square Enix's MMORPG . So get ready to mount your best Chocobo and set off to conquer Eorzea on Android and iOS!
The alliance between Square Enix and Tencent is no secret and, more importantly, is nothing new. Back in August 2018, the Japanese multinational announced a collaboration with the Chinese publisher. More recently, last May, Square Enix confirmed that it was working on a number of projects with Tencent. Well, one of those projects could well be the arrival of Final Fantasy XIV on mobile.

Analyst Daniel Ahmad revealed on X a list of games that have been given the green light byChina's General Administration of Press and Publishing. Among them is Final Fantasy XIV on mobile, which was the subject of a few rumours. The trademark was recently registered by Lightspeed Studios, a branch of Tencent.
Square Enix and Tencent have yet to make any official announcements, but the ultra-popular MMORPG could well be released in China, and later worldwide, by the end of the year.
Unfortunately for those who dream of taking the world of Eorzea with them in their pocket, it looks like Final Fantasy XIV on mobile (to be called Final Fantasy XIV: Crystal World) will be a standalone, a completely different game to Square Enix's MMORPG. Of course, no other information has been revealed about the game's content.

And since no updates or major events are planned for FFXIV on PC in 2024, we can expect Crystal World to be released by the end of the year, at least in China. Porting Square Enix's MMORPG is clearly one of the studio's objectives, the game having been deployed on Xbox very recently. What's more, its producer Naoki Yoshida has expressed a desire to see FFXIV land on the upcoming Nintendo Switch.
So a mobile port seems inevitable, and we'll be sure to keep you up to date with all the latest news on the subject!
