What is Wordle, the game?

If you're a regular Twitter user, you may have seen tweets with coloured boxes, without understanding their meaning. Well, these are simply users sharing their results on Wordle or one of its French adaptations. So what is the Wordle game?

Created in 2021 by Josh Wardle during the lockdown, Wordle is a word game developed in JavaScript and accessible from a web browser. The game's sharing of results has caused a buzz on Twitter. As well as telling you about the buzz of the game, we'll explain how to use Wordle easily.

While 90 players participated in Wordle on November 1, the site had more than 2 million players just two months later. Bought out in January 2022 for several million dollars, Wordle is now available on the New York Times website.

How to use Wordle?

Wordle is anadaptation of the TV game show Lingo, the American equivalent of Motus in France. The principle is simple: guess a word in less than 6 tries. It's a bit like Mastermind with letters.

In the American version of the Wordle game, the word to find has 5 letters. You have no starting letter. Once the first word is validated, the results are displayed according to the colours. If the letter's box is green, it is well placed. If it is yellow, the letter is present in the word, but not in the right place. If the box remains grey, the letter is simply not in the word.

When you finish the game, you can copy and share your Wordle results with your friends or on social networks. The Wordle result to be shared looks like this:

One of the strengths of Wordle as a game is that only one word is available each day. This allows you to compare your result with others and create a daily appointment.

How to use My Wordle and create your own words?

Once on the page, select the language (French, English or Spanish) and insert your word. Unlike Wordle, you don't have to limit yourself to 5 letters. Then click on Generate Link and share the link to see your friends' results.
