It's not clear who's handling the partnerships for PUBG Mobile. But the brains behind it are never short of ideas. After next-gen partnerships with K-pop group BLACKPINK or a crossover with the movie Kong vs Godzilla, the Battle Royale has this time decided to give a nod to an older generation. The PUBG Mobile X Sakura Wars collaboration should indeed bring back some memories for fans of Japanese games from the 1990s. And to those who discovered the licence on PS4 in the last two years, of course.
On paper, it's hard to see what connects the two universes... Since in PUBG Mobile, there's not really room for robotic fighters. Moreover, the enemies are primarily other players who are trying, as best they can, to survive as long as possible to make the top 1. We are quite far from the demonic forces that corrupt the hearts of humans to take control of their bodies and minds. But the developers have still managed to build a bridge between the two video games. For the time being, the secret is well kept and it is not yet clear what will come of this partnership. But we can at least expect to see skinsAt the very least, we can expect to see some new games, theme music and an event. In the trailer presenting the project, we can also hear the voice of Chisa Yokoyama... The Japanese actress who gave life to Sakura.
The process remains quite classic, even if for this collaboration, we really didn't see it coming! This is surely a good way for PUBG Mobile to continue to develop its audience. While the game is very popular in China, Japan is also a prime market.
Japan is currently the third most profitable country for PUBG Mobile developers. That's according to the latest Sensor Tower study. But this podium also hides a big disparity... Since Japan with 4.8% of revenues and light years away from China, which would produce more than 50% of the game's revenues.
So even if the collaboration with Sakura Wars works well, the Japanese market still has room to catch up with the Chinese market.
