What is a 4X mobile game?
4X games on Android and iOS take their name from the four main actions that make up the gameplay loop: eXplore, eXpand, eXploit and eXterminate. In reality, 4X is a sub-genre of RTS and strategy games. In fact, 4X on mobile also includes turn-based combat, as well as management elements, both of resources and of the military units that will have to explore or fight.
4X is not the most represented category of games on Android and iOS. But there are some very good titles, including Star Trek Fleet Command.
What are the special features of 4X on Android and iOS?
eXplore : in a mobile 4X, exploration is central. This means deploying special units to collect resources, conquer new territories and find new civilisations.
eXpand: once new lands have been discovered, you'll need to expand your base and territory to increase your power.
eXploit: exploiting resources is an essential part of managing your economy, army and population.
eXterminate: Combat is at the heart of 4X gameplay, pitting different civilisations or factions against each other, depending on the theme. You'll need to beat your opponents to dominate them and gain ever more power.
