The news came via the Instagram account of WCK, the Korean League of Legends Wild Rift league. The Wild Rift Icons Global Championship 2022, the first ever world championship for the game, will take place in Europe.
The first Wild Rift World Championship
It's official. As we celebrate the game's second anniversary at the end of the year, League of Legends: Wild Rift will finally have its first World Championship. And good news for the European players, as it will be held in Madrid, Spain. The Wild Rift Icons Global Championship 2022 will be held from June 14 to July 8, 2022.
However, this is not the first esport event hosted by Riot Games on Wild Rift. A previous competition in Singapore, called the Horizon Cup, saw players share a $500,000 cash prize.
The teams qualified for the Wild Rift Icons Global Championship 2022
At the moment, we do not yet know what format the first Wild Rift World Championship will take. However, we do know that 24 teams will participate.
Of the qualified teams, 6 will qualify automatically. The other 16 teams will have to go through a play-in phase to reach the final phase. As for the number of participants, not all regions of the world are on the same level as in LoL, as can be seen in this picture.
The Asian leagues will be in the majority with a total of 13 teams. North America will send only two challengers. As for Europe, like the Latin American and Brazilian leagues, we will have three teams competing to become the winners of the Wild Rift Icons Global Championship 2022 and become the first League of Legends: Wild Rift World Champions.
