Futurama : Game of Drones review: Our opinion about this mobile game

More info

Futurama: Game of Drones is a puzzle game based on the famous animated TV series of the same name, Futurama. With its great sense of humour, the series allows itself a little leeway in the world of mobile games. But what is it really? Is it a 'match-4' like Candy Crush and the other games of the same type that abound on the play store and app store? That's what we're going to find out in this review of Futurama: Game of Drones.

Futurama: Game of Drones, robots, drones and ferrets

Futurama: Game of Drones places us in the series created by Matt Groening (who also created The Simpsons). If you're a fan of the TV series, you'll already be on conquered ground, as you'll find a lot of fan service, i.e. elements belonging to the series. Whether it's the characters, the world or even the humour of the series, it's all served up to you on a silver platter. In fact, the game does a great job of conveying the whole of the comic and slightly silly world of the series, which is so popular. In short, what makes us laugh is the scenario. In short, the Professor has designed delivery drones, the aim being to make them travel across the universe. Futurama: Game of Drones nevertheless features 11 chapters, each divided into several levels, giving the game a very long lifespan and hours of reflection. A few adverts may slip in during the game, but nothing too annoying.

Gameplay

We've tested it out and the gameplay is similar to that of Candy Crush and other games. In short, there's nothing that's going to break any bones. In general, all you need to do is group 4 drones of the same colour together to make a combo and eliminate them. Bringing several drones together can also reveal bonuses that allow you to clear several lines at once. You'll need to defeat enemies, perform combos, destroy certain elements etc... nothing very innovative here. But the recipe works. What's more, if you manage to create more than one combo, super-powerful bonuses will appear. What's more, as the game progresses, new challenges and new mechanics will appear, making the levels slightly more complicated. You will have 5 lives in total. At the end of these 58 lives you'll either have to wait, or you'll be able to pay for lives with in-app purchases. Note that all the boosts you can use during the levels are also available via in-app purchases. Like all "match-3" games, "match-4" is very enjoyable, but not without its faults. A classic criticism of this type of game is that there's a great deal of chance and luck involved in the scrolling and appearance of the drones, so sometimes you'll accumulate bonus after bonus and other times it'll be a drought. What's more, on each level the player will only be able to count on a certain number of moves defined well in advance, in order to solve the mission given by one of the characters from the series. If things go well, this stock of moves proves sufficient. However, if you're unlucky and fate has its way with you, this element of chance is sure to spell the end of the level and a resounding failure. A failure that will also cost you lives. At least, that's the impression I got from this test.

My verdict

All in all, Futurama: Game of Drones is a good match 3 like. If you like the Futurama licence, you'll certainly be won over, but if you don't like this type of game, or the Futurama universe, you're well advised to skip it. Futurama: Game of Drones in no way revolutionises the genre in terms of its gameplay or difficulty, but it does offer an entertaining storyline. The only criticism I have is that there's no reward for finishing a chapter or a level, but I can forgive that as I'm a fan of the series' humour.
